The ongoing shift to remote/hybrid work that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated has created new complexities in protecting critical data. Many organizations have dramatically accelerated the shift of workloads to the cloud for business resiliency purposes and have ramped up the adoption of software-as-a-service (SaaS) to accommodate remote workers. Foundry’s 2022 Cloud Computing research found that 76% of enterprises accelerated their cloud migrations in 2021.

With the growth and usage of applications comes data sprawl. Tracking the location and status of data distributed across multiple applications and platforms, including home PCs and mobile devices, has created a new urgency for protecting data and making it accessible to users. Unfortunately, rules about copying and securely managing data are much more difficult to enforce in a distributed environment than in the office.
